‘Honour fallen soldiers’: Manchester MP lobbies council for street name memorial ahead of Armed Forces Day

By Danielle Wainwright

The bereaved families of servicemen killed in the line of duty should be given the chance to name streets after their loved ones in time for Armed forces Day, a Manchester MP is urging.

As Britain prepares to commemorate its fallen soldiers on June 29, Stretford and Urmston MP Kate Green has asked Trafford Council to follow in the footsteps of Rochdale and offer families an opportunity to honour loved ones with street names.

If passed, families of fallen personnel in the area would be asked whether they would like a commemorative road or street, and after a consultation of location and precise name the council would organise an official opening ceremony.

Ms Green said: “Offering to introduce new street names would be a meaningful, lasting, and respectful way to show the value we place on those who have served and been lost.

“I really do hope Trafford Council will consider this idea to provide a lasting commemoration for service personnel killed in the line of duty.”

Ms Green is also lobbying the council to consider memorial monuments for those who have died in recent conflicts.

“We rightly have memorials to those who died in the First and Second World War, but we should recognise fallen soldiers from more recent conflicts too”, she said.
