Time is running out: One in three Manchester parents risk missing child’s primary school place deadline

By Stephen Hutson

One in three Manchester parents have yet to apply for a place at a primary school for their children – despite the deadline being only TWO DAYS away.

Council chiefs are urging those who have not applied to do so by 5pm on Wednesday to give their child the best chance of getting a place at their preferred school.

Parents are being reminded that attendance at a school nursery does not guarantee admission to that school’s reception class.

Councillor Sheila Newman, Executive Member for Children’s Services, Manchester City Council, said: “Time is fast running out for parents to apply for their reception class place.

“Going to school for the first time is an important milestone in every child’s life, so it’s important that parents find out as much as possible about the schools they’re interested in sending their child to and make their application now.”

Parents are encouraged to make and rank at least three preferences when they make their application.

Councillor Newman added: “Standards of literacy and numeracy in the city are the highest they have ever been and more children than ever are attending a good or outstanding Manchester school.

“Applying on time […] will give parents the best chance of getting a school place for their child at one of their preferred schools.”
