Since the 1970s, Working Mens’ Clubs have been in decline. At their peak in the early 70s there were more than 4,000 of them across the country, but today that number has halved.
They are often seen as a relic from a bygone age of sexism and toxic masculinity.
However, this is anything but the case for Bilton Working Mens’ Club, which is at the heart of its North Yorkshire community.
Formed in 1914, the club has around 800 members. It has two snooker tables, two pool tables and a function room, as well as the compulsory dartboard. They host bingo every Saturday, and a variety of other events, from Northern Soul nights to charity fundraisers.
Phil Smith, who runs the club, has been trying to develop the club into a live music venue, while also keeping long standing members happy, some of whom have been members for decades.
He tells MM the secret to his success in keeping the club thriving in 2023.
