Bolton’s two-time world boxing champion Amir Khan will lead an operation to help victims of flooding in Cumbria.
The Amir Khan Foundation is leading a joint operation with humanitarian charity Penny Appeal to provide moral and practical support to those affected by the recent flooding in Cumbria.
The boxer will lead volunteers from both organisations to visit Carlisle and the surrounding area on Saturday 12 December, following the destruction caused by Storm Desmond.
Teams will also visit affected communities to show their support and distribute hot meals to those families devastated by the flooding.
He said: “The UK community has been so supportive of me and this is just a small way I can give back.
“Once the flood water disappears, the hard work really starts, as families, most with children, return to severely damaged homes and destroyed possessions.
“Many are still without electricity and heating – so I’m proud to be going with Penny Appeal and our dedicated volunteers to help in every way that we can.
“It’s important that we come together, as British people do at times like this, and remind those affected that they’re not alone in dealing with this crisis.”
International humanitarian charity Penny Appeal has been providing hot meals in the UK to those in need for over a year, through its Love Thy Neighbour campaign. Khan has previously worked with the Penny Appeal, supplying hot meals to homeless people in Manchester.
Aamer Naeem, Penny Appeal CEO, added: “The UK community has always given generously to disasters overseas, but we recognise that we need to help at home too.
“That’s why Penny Appeal also carries out projects in the UK and, at times like these we deploy our network of volunteers to safely do what they can.”
