A man accused of attempting to rugby tackle a female policewoman onto a tram just as it was about to pull into a station has been charged.
The incident happened on Sunday at around 2.30pm when two neighbourhood police officers were waiting at a tram stop in Weaste.
The officers were at the station on Eccles New Road following reports that a wanted man was there.
As they arrived a man charged at one of the officers and attempted to rugby tackle her into the path of an oncoming tram.
The officer was able to squirm out of the path of the man; however he fell onto the tracks.
The tram driver slammed on his brakes bringing the vehicle to a stop only inches from where the man was.
He was arrested and charged with attempting to seriously injure a police officer.
Alan Paul Froggatt, 35, of no fixed address has been charged with attempted assault and is next due to appear at Manchester Crown Court on January 3.
