Manchester gay village canal body: Man, 27, arrested on suspicion of murder

By Danielle Wainwright

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a man was found floating in a canal in Manchester’s gay village on Sunday.

Sean Michael Markey, 39, from Newton Heath was found shortly before 3.40pm in the canal at the junction of Princess Street and Canal Street.

Police as well as underwater rescue teams drained the canal and a post mortem into his cause of death was inconclusive and further tests are being carried out.

The man who was arrested remains in police custody for questioning.

Greater Manchester Police Det Insp Brian Morley said: “Our thoughts are with Sean’s family at this difficult time and we are supporting them while we work to establish what exactly happened to him.

“It is not yet clear how or when Sean died so we are urging anyone who may have seen or spoken to him since he was last seen in the early hours on Wednesday, to get in touch with police and help us piece together his final movements.”

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 3221 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
