A huge percentage increase in Stockport’s young people benefitting from apprenticeships has been welcomed by a Greater Manchester MP.
Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell has revealed 3000 people from Stockport were on apprenticeships last year, which is 74% up on three years ago.
With Stockport businesses looking to embrace apprenticeship schemes, the Communities and Local Government Minister welcomes them as a way to kick-start the careers of youngsters.
“Apprenticeships are a brilliant way for young people to learn the skills and get the experience necessary for a successful career,” he said.
“Liberal Democrats in the Coalition Government have promoted and invested heavily in apprenticeships because they are one of the most effective ways of helping young people get jobs.
“Apprenticeships also allow us to build a stronger economy, with a highly-skilled and flexible workforce.
“Apprenticeships rely on employers making opportunities available and that’s why I have been working with businesses in Stockport to make more places for apprentices available.”
These figures follow the introduction last month of a new campaign by Stockport College called The Only Way is Apprenticeships which aims to highlight the value of education and employment.
The scheme was launched during National Apprenticeship Week when the College pushed the positive impact apprenticeships can have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
Stockport College student Lyle Hammersley, 22, from Woodsmoor is currently learning his trade after being given the opportunity of an apprenticeship at Express Solicitors in Northenden.
Mr Hammersley recently joined the administration team at the legal firm, which he combines with studying Business Administration as part of a NVQ Level 2 qualification.
“I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to work at Express,” he said.
“From my apprenticeship I am hoping to gain good work experience and invaluable insights into the legal industry, as well as gain further qualifications and improve my confidence.”
Express Solicitors are just one Stockport firm committed to giving young people the opportunity of valuable experience of the workplace.
“It is great to have our first apprentice at Express Solicitors,” said HR Manager Carole Jones.
“Lyle joins our busy administration team and will be studying for his qualifications alongside working at the firm.
“To take on someone so early in their career proves our willingness and commitment to helping young people reach their full potential.”
