A Manchester charity has been praised by the mayor of a Filipino city for the ‘untiring’ support they provided in the wake of a destructive typhoon that struck in November.
In a heart-warming thank you letter the mayor of Ormoc, Hon. Edward C. Codilla, offered thanks for the aid that Human Appeal gave after Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippine city.
Typhoon Haiyan was the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record and killed more than 6,000 people and affected at least 11million.
Mr Codilla said: “The recent wrath of Typhoon Yolanda was very painful to every Ormocanon who suffered enormous damage and loss of property. Your unselfish and untiring support has been a very big factor in encouraging us to overcome and recover from this horrible tragedy.
“In behalf of the whole Ormocanon community, we humbly express our sincerest gratitude for the unwavering and selfless support that you have extended to our beloved City and our people.
“We hope and pray for your continued assistance in rebuilding and sustaining the full recovery of Ormoc City and its people.”
The charity provided 3,000 food parcels and a further hygiene packs throughout Ormoc City and Biliran, an island province in the Philippines which also saw heavy damage from the typhoon.
Human Appeal also distributed medical aid and gave health checks to 280 Filipinos in Cananga Barangay, which lies a short distance away from Ormoc.
Othman Moqbel, Human Appeal’s Chief Executive, said: “I am very happy that the Mayor of Ormoc has written to us and that our work in the Philippines has been recognised.
“As soon as Typhoon Haiyan struck, we had a team on the ground providing medicine, food and safe drinking water. We were based in Cebu but we were delivering aid to Ormoc and Tacloban.
“The need for help in the Philippines is still great and we urge people not to forget about the victims.”
