Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has put his club in the headlines for the wrong reasons off the pitch after he was pictured wearing a suicide bomber outfit at a Christmas and belated birthday fancy dress party.
England international Smalling has apologised for the ill-advised stunt, where he used empty bottles of Jaegermeister and cans of Red Bull strapped to his chest – an attempt to look like the popular drink ‘Jaegerbomb’.
“Although he fully accepts in hindsight it was an ill-thought out and insensitive decision, absolutely no harm was intended whatsoever and he apologises for any offence caused,” Smalling’s management company, the Wasserman Media Group, said in a statement.
United lost three consecutive games for the first time since 2001 on Tuesday when Premier League bottom club Sunderland inflicted a 2-1 Capital One Cup semi-final, first-leg defeat on the English champions.
Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson was also criticised in the aftermath of the loss, for his presence at United’s games this season despite retiring in the summer after 26 years in charge where he won 38 trophies.
