Body of man found floating in canal in Manchester’s gay village named – post mortem deemed inconclusive

The body of a man found floating in a canal near Princess Street and Canal Street on Sunday has been named as 39-year-old Sean Michael Markey from Newton Heath.

Police are now appealing for information after post mortem results came back inconclusive, further tests will now be carried out.

His body was recovered after police drained the canal and Sean was last seen on Wednesday October 2 on Nicholas Street in the city centre.

Detective Inspector Brian Morley said: “Our thoughts are with Sean’s family at this difficult time and we are supporting them while we work to establish what exactly happened to him.

“It is not yet clear how or when Sean died so we are urging anyone who may have seen or spoken to him since he was last seen in the early hours on Wednesday, to get in touch with police and help us piece together his final movements.”

Police are appealing for information to trace Sean’s last movements and establish the full circumstances surrounding his death.
