Good for what ales you: Manchester’s Oast House enters record books for world’s biggest ever beer tasting

By Marios Papaloizou

Manchester stumbled boozily into the Guinness Book of World Records yesterday as the Oast House in Spinningfields broke the record for the largest ever beer tasting event.

The pub managed to entice 322 ale-loving participants through its doors to assist with the record attempt – although the offer of free beer might have played a part.

Participants – some of whom had travelled from as far as Scotland – basked in a fine Manchester evening and cheered in joy as the official adjudicator confirmed them as they largest tasting group of all time.

As Manchester drunk its way into the record books the Oast House displaced Biergilde BNB in the Netherlands who had previously attracted 267 thirsty beer samplers.

Master of ceremonies for the event was the Oast House’s ‘beer guru’ Warren McCoubrey who talked the crowd through the three samples.

All of the beers tasted were produced by Oldham’s own Phoenix Brewery and they included the pub’s most popular cask ale – Phoenix Arizona.
