Andy Burnham has secured his seat in Leigh, with a majority of 53.65% an increase over the 48% he gained in 2010.
Burnham praised the people of Leigh who have voted him in for the fourth time running saying: “The people of Leigh are the most warm and decent people you could ever to wish to meet.
“I thank them and, indeed, I thank all of my fellow candidates for the courteous and respectful way this campaign has been conducted.”
He also thanked the police for helping to keep order at the counts, and had particular praise for his campaign agent, Jo Platt.
Burnham praised the work of Ed Milliband in this election, stating that he has lead a ‘superb campaign’.
“Five years ago, London tried to break up this constituency by redrawing our boundary. They tried to silence Leigh’s voice – well Leigh has roared back at London tonight.
“It is therefore humbling for me to be asked by them for the fourth time to represent them in Parliament.
“Thank you for the people of Leigh to give me this opportunity to speak for them again, Leigh is on the up but there is more to do.”
