Jailed: Bolton reveller who beat woman ‘black and blue’ in rape attempt moments after coming to aid in catfight

A reveller who tried to savagely rape a woman moments after he stopped her getting hurt in a catfight in Bolton has been jailed for five years.

Matthew Broughton, 29, stepped in to intervene when he spotted the victim being pinned down on a pavement by another woman during a row over a mobile phone.

But after the he split the two women up, the motor trade boss began flirting with the victim and tried to kiss her – only to turn violent when she rejected his advances.

During the assault outside a bar in Bolton, Greater Manchester, Broughton bit her face and told her she was going to die before pulling her jeans down and pushing her head against the floor.

A doorman from a nearby pub heard the woman’s screams and tried to wrestle Broughton away – but he tried to shrug him off so he could continue his attack.

After a struggle doorstaff eventually managed to drag Broughton off the woman before he falsely claimed she was his sister-in law.

The victim, 28, suffered cuts and bruises to her face, a cut inside her mouth, a bite mark below her right eye and other bruises on her body.

She told police: “He has beaten me black and blue. My body is a mess”.

At Bolton Crown Court, Broughton, of Cow Lees, Westhoughton, pleaded guilty to attempted rape and was also ordered to sign the sex offender’s register for life.

The incident occurred on November 21 last year after the victim had been enjoying a night out at Courtney’s Bar, Bradshawgate, Bolton.

She was out the back of the nearby Corner Club when she saw a woman who wrongly accused her of taking her mobile phone.

An argument broke out and the victim was pushed to the ground by the other woman, who then got on top of her.

Broughton, who was walking past, appeared to come to her aid and broke the row up causing the other woman to leave.

But he and the victim ended up in the alleyway as they hid from the other woman – and he began making his sexual advances.

Broughton later said he had ‘made the most horrific decision of his life’.

But the judge Miss Recorder Miss Rowena Goode, told him: ‘It’s fortunate witnesses heard the lady’s shouts and disturbed you before you could actually get to the stage of committing the act of rape.

“Understandably this incident has had a profound effect upon her. She has found it very difficult to come to terms with what has happened. She has feelings of revulsion.”

Today Det Cone Hayley Thornley, of Greater Manchester Police Serious Sexual Offences Unit, said: ”Broughton subjected this woman to a degrading and violent attack on the floor of a pub refuse area because she had the nerve to reject his advances.

“Even when confronted by another man who tried to come to her aid Broughton tried to fight him off and was determined to continue his attack. Broughton clearly poses a risk to women.”
