Man arrested on suspicion of murder after fatal Ashton shooting of Kieran McGrath

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of Kieran McGrath was found outside Ashton police station at the weekend.

The 26-year-old collapsed outside the station on Manchester Road around 10.25pm on Saturday October 4, after suffering serious injuries sustained by a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Kieran was pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts by paramedics to resuscitate him.

Earlier that night, Kieran had been inside the Sheldon Arms Pub with friends before he left around 10:20pm.

As he walked towards a white Audi A3 several shots were fired in his direction, with one hitting him.

Despite suffering life-threatening injuries, Kieran, a keen boxer, managed to climb into his car and drive himself to a nearby police station where he was found collapsed.

A 23-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody for questioning. 

Officers are continuing to appeal for information and are urging people to phone police on 0161 856 4711 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
