King Charles III has become the 40th monarch to be crowned at Westminster Abbey in a Coronation tradition dating back to 1066.
He was crowned by the archbishop of Canterbury in front of a congregation of 100 heads of state, royals, celebrities and key figures from across the globe.
Throughout the service, Charles was presented with the Sovereign’s Orb, the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross, and the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Dove.
At midday, the archbishop crowned King Charles III by placing the 360-year-old St Edward’s Crown on his head and proclaiming: “God save the King!”
King Charles III will be only the seventh monarch to wear St Edward’s Crown, which holds 444 separate jewels and gemstones, and was last worn at the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953.
