An Oldham fan, stabbed on a busy Liverpool street after seeing his team crash out of the FA Cup, has had an operation to stop internal bleeding.
Mark Gregory, 35, is said to have lost a lot of blood when knifed outside the Flat Iron pub near Liverpool’s Anfield stadium, but his condition is now believed to be stable.
The attacker approached Mr Gregory from behind before stabbing him four times in the backside and once in the leg.
Mr Gregory’s wife took to Facebook to condemn the attack, and give an update to the well-wishers who have flooded Mark’s page.
“Dirty trick stabbing him from behind,” wrote Louise Gregory.
“All he did was walk out of pub to go & get train home to his family.”
The 35-year-old fan had flagged down an ambulance himself after the attack, and was quickly taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital.
Mr Gregory had been in attendance to see his beloved Oldham Athletic’s third-round FA Cup defeat at Liverpool, where Iago Aspas and a James Tarkowski own goal, helped the Premier League team into the next round.
The attack on Mr Gregory occurred very shortly after full-time in the sellout clash, which leads local police to think that many fans must have been around to witness the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy O’Connor said: “I want to reassure people that we are conducting a thorough investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“This was a nasty assault which has left a man in hospital.
“The area was very busy with both football fans and passing motorists when the incident took place and I’m confident some people will have seen what happened.”
DCI O’Connor has appealed for anyone with any information to call St Anne Street CID on 0151 777 4064 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
