Heartbreaking new campaign a “call for help” for overstretched homelessness charity

A new campaign which aims to expose the reality of homelessness is “a call for help” from Manchester charity Mustard Tree.

The organisation, which seeks to eradicate poverty and prevent homelessness, said it is facing unprecedented demand as a result of the cost-of-living crisis.

One in 74 people are homeless in Manchester, according to a survey by Shelter. And Oldham is particularly bad – with homelessness nearly twice the national average.

Jo Walby, CEO of Mustard Tree, said: “Increased demand for our services due to the cost-of-living crisis and post-pandemic fallout, is leaving us creaking at the seams.

“We are on the precipice of having to consider making reductions in the services we can provide – which is utterly terrifying.

“This campaign is a call for help, to get the support of local people and businesses in Greater Manchester, to help us keep going.”

The campaign, created by Manchester-based creative agency Leith, sets estate agents’ property particulars next to images showing the living conditions faced by homeless people.

A “stunning one bed duplex in the centre of the city” and a “fantastic ground floor residence close to major transport links” are set against mattresses in damp doorways, surrounded by rubbish.

The digital billboards will be shown across Manchester and on social media in the run up to World Homeless Day next Tuesday (October 10).
