Surf while you get dragged around the shops: Mancunians to enjoy free WiFi across the city as scheme rolled out

By Salah Sharief

Manchester shoppers will soon be able to enjoy WiFi access in more than 135 sites across the city centre this summer.

Users will be able to browse the net free of charge for up to 30 minutes a day with unlimited access to some public sector websites.

Manchester’s free public WiFi network, FreeBeeMCR, was launched in Albert Square, Cross Street and St Peter’s Square.

But in the latest move passengers at major transport hubs including Shudehill Interchange and the Piccadilly Gardens bus stops will soon be able to browse the web for free while waiting for their bus or tram.

Councillor Nigel Murphy, Executive Member for Environment, said: “We are determined to make Manchester one of the world’s leading digital cities, with residents, visitors and businesses enjoying the full benefits.”

Transport for Greater Manchester’s Information Systems Director, David Hytch, said: “We want to improve the public transport experience for our customers and providing Wi-Fi access is just part of that.”
