18-year-old Hamza Aslam becomes a parish councillor in Tameside

An 18-year-old has been elected as a parish councillor in the Mossley Parish Council, Cheshire ward, in Tameside.

Hamza Aslam, from the Labour and Co-operative Party, who was one of four parish councillors to be elected in Cheshire, says he hopes his win will encourage young people to go into politics.

He told MM: “I think it sends a message that young people, despite how much this government tries to put us down, can go into politics.

“Young people need to start getting their voices heard.”

Aslam, who received 622 (20%) votes, plans to celebrate the win by sleeping – after the overnight count in Tameside ended at around 3:30am.

The other elected candidates were Frank Travis (Labour), Pat Mullin (Labour), and Dean Tom Aylett (Independent).

Hattie Thomas from the Women’s Equality Party was the only candidate to not be elected.
