Manchester motorists are being urged to sit in their cars when de-icing them this winter, following a spate of vehicle thefts that occurred last year.
Two cars were stolen in Manchester on Tuesday night after they were left unattended with their engines running by owners waiting for de-icers to take effect.
During winter 2012/13, 46 vehicles were taken by this method across Greater Manchester and police are advising motorists to take extra care.
“Every winter on frosty mornings people leave vehicles with engines running while they go indoors to keep out of the cold,” said Crime Reduction Specialist Darron Tickle.

“It’s therefore no surprise that when they go back outside their driveway is empty, as it only takes a few seconds to steal a car with keys left in the ignition.
“Our advice to all drivers is to stay with the vehicle when defrosting it, and if you need to leave the car then remove any valuables, close all windows, lock all doors and take the keys with you.”
With winter drawing in, GMP also warned that peak times for offences of this nature are 7am-9am on weekdays when people are getting ready to leave for work.
Motorists should also remember that if they leave their car unattended then their insurance may be invalidated.
