Manchester’s annual Christmas lights switch-on thrilled over 20,000 people in Albert Square last night with music, dancing and theatrical performances.
This was the last switch-on in Albert Square which will begin a major refurbishment from 2019 and will be completed in the next few years.
Thousands of people filled the square to get in the festive mood and share the Christmas spirit many of whom joined in the singing of popular festive songs.
Manchester’s Show Choir performed the popular Christmas song by The Pogues, Fairytale of New York which was a hit 30 years ago.
There were many special guests including popular singer Max Georges from the band The Wanted who sang various songs including We Own the Night which got the crowds dancing and singing.
“I feel very proud to be a Mancunian,” he said to the crowd during the performance.
Families, friends, and young people jumped to the beats of his music with many using mobile phone cameras to capture the memory of the event.
Jonas Blue entertained the crowd with his music while there were a host of songs performed from theatre productions including Wicked and The Producers.
After the switch-on, fireworks rose up from the clock tower of the town hall with wonderful colours and sound.
Visitors cheered with excitement at the display which had Christmas music playing in time with the fireworks.
Cllr Pat Karney, Manchester City Council’s official Christmas spokesperson, said: “The atmosphere in Albert Square during the Lights Switch-on never fails to make an impact on me. The crowd tonight were remarkable.
