Peter Bone, former deputy leader of the House of Commons, said that HS2 was too expensive of a project and that the government should have invested in infrastructure instead.
On Monday this week, the second day of the Conservative Party Conference, as protests mellowed down, Sky News reported that HS2’s Manchester leg was going to be cancelled.
We spoke to MPs, Tory candidates and Geordie Greig, Editor-in-chief of the Independent – who first broke the news about HS2 – on their opinions about this.
One one hand, Peter Bone claimed to be vehemently against HS2, while on the other, Conservative candidate for Stevenage Bradley Clarkson said he supported it, and that the rumoured decision to cancel the Manchester leg would not have been taken lightly.
Geordie Greig questioned why the party thought of making this announcement while in Manchester.
