Bogus have-a-go hero cons woman, 92, in ‘sickening’ distraction theft at Wigan home

By Helen Le Caplain

A callous thief who pretended to fend off a break-in at a pensioner’s Wigan home ended up stealing her wallet.

At about 11am on July 3, the offender knocked on the back door of the 92-year-old woman’s house on Collingwood Street, Standish.

He claimed that he had seen youths trying to get into the house via the upstairs bathroom window which had been left ajar and offered his help.

The pair then went upstairs and when there was nobody there, the man asked the victim to check her valuables which she then did.

When downstairs the offender asked for a cup of tea and while the victim went into the kitchen the man went back upstairs, stole the woman’s wallet and left.

He is described as being white, 5ft 6in tall, of medium build and in his mid-30s.

Detective Constable Amelia Trimble said: “This was a devastating experience for the victim, and a sickening crime that we are investigating thoroughly.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have seen the offender in the area.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7259 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
