A recent study has revealed that Mancunians are among the most health conscious in the country, coming second to Bristolians.
This research was conducted by fitness experts at Bulk.com, which analysed the cities and towns in the UK where people are most interested in their health.
Using 27 search terms related to health and fitness, the study combined average monthly searches in 62 cities and large towns to reveal the monthly searches per 100,000 people in each area.
A representative from Bulk.com said: “Every month, there are thousands of searches for terms related to health and fitness in the UK.
“This research offers a fascinating insight into where those searches are predominantly coming from and ultimately highlights where in the UK people are most interested in living a healthy and active lifestyle.”
On average, Manchester has 5,625 average monthly searches per 100,000 people, slightly lower than Bristol, which is 5,636.
Among 61 out of the 62 cities, the most popular searched term was ‘gyms near me’. However, East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, was a sole outlier, where people searched for the phrase ‘calorie calculator’ slightly more.
Another popular search result was ‘swimming pool near me’, ranking as the second most searched term in 48 of the 62 cities.
Coming in behind Manchester was Reading, despite having a population three times smaller than Manchester, with 5,347 average monthly searches per 100,000 people.
The top ten also included Norwich, Cambridge, Salford, Preston, Birmingham and Liverpool, while Newport is the UK city where people are least interested in being healthy.
The pandemic is one of the reasons that many people are concerned more about their mental and physical health.
Matt Buckley, a PureGym regional manager, said: “In Manchester, we’ve found that our members have been particularly keen to get back into group exercise, which is a clear shift from the height of the pandemic, with our Cycle and Legs, Bums and Tums classes proving really popular once again.”
