Mum sends painted pebbles across the world in memory of son

The mum of a man who passed away last year is honouring his memory with pebbles in a bid to “make his name known everywhere”.

Fran Lee, 58, from the Kirklees area, West Yorkshire, lost her 22-year-old son Saul in October last year and has since been sharing his name to over 40 countries including Jamaica, the USA and Thailand.

The campaign started with a Facebook group, Saul11 (pebbles), where people share where they have left and found painted ‘Saul’ pebbles around the world.

Fran first got the idea when a friend gifted her a guardian angel pebble.

She said: “I carried it in my hand everywhere I went, at the funeral I decided to place it with Saul so he could keep it with him.

“After, I asked my friend if she could get me another one so I could continue carrying him around with me.”

Fran then had the thought to spread his legacy through these pebbles and began making some of her own, which quickly grew into a huge community effort.

The group name, Saul11 (pebbles), originates from his number 11 position at the Saville Arms Football team.

Over 500 people joined the Saul11 (pebbles) Facebook page where people paint their own pebbles and leave them in spots abroad and in the UK on their travels.

Fran said: “Saul’s name is so unusual and it’s a massive part of who Saul was, I want people to remember him and hopefully if they find a pebble share a smile and feel the love that he gave off.

“At first it was only meant to be local but the whole thing took off and it’s so nice to know that he is reaching out and touching so many people’s lives, exactly like he did when he was here.”
