A Bolton man died after being hit by three vehicles while walking down the M61.
The pedestrian, said to be in his 40s, was hit at around 11pm last night on the northbound carriageway, just before junction 6 near Horwich.
Officers found his body trapped under a vehicle and is believed to have suffered multiple injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is believed the man had been struck by three vehicles, including a Toyota Yaris and a Vauxhall Astra.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service confirmed to MM that they were called at the scene at 11.17pm.
Northwest Motorway Police shut the M61 between junctions 5 and 6 at Westhoughton at around 11.30pm.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the collision.
