Serial tyre slashers targeted more than 20 cars on New Year’s Eve across Oldham in a ‘mindless’ act of vandalism.
As New Year revellers saw in 2014, many were forced to ring their insurance companies as vehicles parked in the Napier Street and Winsor Road areas were targeted by vandals.
One witness spotted a criminal slashing the tyres and running off and police believe the weapon used was a sharp weapon to puncture the tyres.
Sergeant Trevor Harrison said: “There is no other way to describe these acts other than total and utter wanton vandalism.
“It is possible the culprit or culprits think they it was a bit of a laugh and a joke but this is absolutely no laughing matter. This is criminal damage on a significant scale and it has caused a lot of upset to a lot of people.
“Most people will be covered by insurance but it is not about the cost – it is about the hassle they’ve had to endure on New Year’s Eve and the disruption to their lives caused by the mindless actions of those responsible.”
Police are appealing for any information to help them catch the culprits.
“We are taking this matter extremely seriously and we will do everything we can, with the public’s help, to identify those responsible for these senseless acts of vandalism,” Sergeant Harrison added.
Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
