BNP leader Nick Griffin declared bankrupt – but will not step down as North West MEP

By Danielle Wainwright

North West MEP Nick Griffin has been declared bankrupt  but will not be forced to step down from his European seat.

The BNP leader appeared at Welshpool County Court yesterday and offered to pay a small amount of money to all his creditors which was rejected.

However he will not step down as MEP as a new rule change means that bankruptcy does not automatically disqualify him.

Griffin wrote on his Twitter account: “A note for all: Being bankrupt does NOT prevent me being or standing as an MEP. It does free me from financial worries. A good day!

“Party funds are not affected in any way. Our campaign in May will be our most professional yet & I will be lead candidate in the North West.”

A BNP spokesperson said that Griffin’s bankruptcy does not affect the party and that all funds were unaffected.

He will be automatically discharged from bankruptcy in one year, on January 2 2015, in accordance with the Insolvency Act.
