Metrolink inspector punched in face and hospitalised after asking Trafford Bar fare dodger to buy ticket

By Ben Southworth

A Metrolink ticket inspector has been hospitalised after being punched in the face by a man who didn’t pay his Metro fare.

The 48-year-old inspector approached two men who got off the tram without a ticket at Trafford Bar.

One of the men bought a ticket from the machine but the other became abusive and punched the inspector in the mouth.

Police have issued an image of a man wanted in connection with the assault which left the inspector with a jaw injury and needing hospital treatment.

Police Constable Lois Bennett, based at Stretford Police Station, said: “The ticket inspector was simply trying to do his job when he was rounded on by this freeloader.

“Not only did he dodge his ticket, but he lashed out at the inspector when he was found out.”

The incident happened at around 1:15pm on April 21 and officers have been working with Metrolink to identify the offender but he remains at large.

Police Constable Bennett added: “This incident did happen some time ago and we have made strenuous efforts to locate the offender.

“However he remains outstanding so please take a look at the image we’ve released today and let us know if you recognise him.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7655 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
