Mancunian holidaymakers are being warned about the dangers of travelling without insurance this summer – as research reveals many are unaware of the high costs of medical treatment abroad.
Summer may well be truly in full swing and in the coming weeks families across Britain look set to pack their bags and set off on an unforgettable holiday.
However, Yvonne Fovargue MP has warned that for some, the great summer getaway may be one to forget if they travel uninsured.
The Makerfield MP was speaking in support of a campaign by ABTA – The Travel Association and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).
According to new research, many UK holidaymakers are unaware of the costs of medical treatment abroad and may be putting themselves at great risk of a huge medical bill should something go wrong.
The research, carried out by ABTA – The Travel Association, suggests that one in five (20%) of individuals travel abroad without insurance.
Yvonne said: “Many countries do not have national schemes to cover the cost of healthcare and treatment abroad can therefore be very costly. It is just not worth taking the risk.”
Those most at risk are young people aged 16-24. FCO research suggests that 48% will have a holiday abroad without taking out travel insurance while 82% of young people admit to taking part in potentially dangerous pursuits such as quad biking and jet skiing while on holiday.
Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive, said: “Unfortunately, accidents can and do happen and sometimes these accidents can lead to costly medical bills.”
ABTA has launched a new advice section on travel insurance for consumers. Visit www.abta.com/travelinsurance for full details.
