Iconic Hacienda building designer to produce ‘creative’ environment to inspire Manchester music students

By Colin Rhodes

The Manchester branch of renowned music school, Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) is set to throw open its doors to a cohort of eager musicians this autumn.

The people behind the £3.5million project on Great Marlborough Street have announced that designer Ben Kelly, the man behind the legendary Hacienda and the Factory Records building, will lend his flair for design to the school’s interior.

Vaseema Hamilton, BIMM Manchester Principal, said: “I wanted the new college to have a real connectivity to the industrial heritage of Manchester as a hard-working town.

“Knowing about Ben’s history of creating hard-working and hard-playing spaces there really wasn’t anybody else that we could even have thought of going to – the regeneration of an existing building really excites me.

“The model for the college we are creating is really founded on the notion of the successful high-end British art school where lots of different disciplines can work together in a creative environment in a space that will inspire them.

“It’ll be somewhere they can make their mistakes and meet future collaborators.”

BIMM have also announced that former Smiths drummer Mike Joyce and Elbow’s Richard Jupp have joined the school’s drumming team

The school, whose alumni include Tom Odell and The Kooks, also have colleges in Brighton, Dublin and Bristol.

They will offer degree course validated by the University of Sussex.
