The National Cycling Centre and nearby Manchester City will feed off the nation’s growing passion for riding bikes by teaching youths key skills this summer to ensure their safety on the streets.
With the Tour de France snaking through countryside near Manchester this weekend and with over 8,000 people commuting into the city on bikes, cycling experts want to breed a generation of expert riders.
Hosted by Manchester City Football Club in August, the three-day holiday programme will include bike ability sessions to fill young riders with confidence when cycling.
“We hope to inspire a new generation of safer, more confident cyclists who continue cycling for many years to come,” said Vicky Spencer, British Cycling’s cycle training manager.
“British Cycling delivers Bike ability and adult cycle training to empower more people to start cycling, increasing their health and well-being and making Britain’s roads a better place to be.”
British Cycling is also holding two training courses – at the National Cycling Centre near City’s Etihad fortress in July and September – to give local people the chance to become instructors themselves.
“High-quality cycle training instructors are at the heart of increasing the number of people cycling regularly, improving their health and fitness and reducing road congestion, by improving skills and confidence,” added Vicky.
“Instructors may work independently, for a cycle training organisation, as a volunteer in a cycling club or for a local authority.”
