Dating app to host exclusive Valentine’s ’empowerment event’

Users of unique dating app Thursday can attend an exclusive Valentine’s empowerment event for women and non-binary people, in collaboration with underwear brand Lounge, tonight.

Launched in 2021, Thursday has an unusual key feature – it can only be used on one day of the week.

The app is all about connecting single people in real life, and users’ messages and matches disappear at midnight each Thursday to encourage this. Matches are advised to exchange contact details or arrange a date on the day, before they are erased.

Jess Wreford, Brand Partnerships Lead for Thursday, told Mancunian Matters: “You get this expectation of what someone’s gonna be like, you’ve built this whole thing up, you’ve been chatting to them, you’ve got a pen pal over a bloody dating app.

“Then you meet them in real life and they’re nothing like that because no one is the same person as they are via message as they are in real life. So we’re really trying to cut that down and get people to meet IRL and see whether they want a second date.”

The brand hosts regular events in Manchester, focussed on building a sense of community amongst single people as well as dating itself.

The partnership with Lounge is an event for women and non-binary people only, and the night will feature everything from guest speakers to bra fittings.

Wreford said: “Valentine’s Day is a bit of a difficult one for single people. Lounge wanted to do something to help women who maybe don’t feel empowered, or even if they do, to learn more about what it is to be on your own, to be single, and to feel great about yourself.

“It really is an empowerment Valentine’s event, to say a little bit of a ‘f***k you’ to Valentine’s Day.”

The event will take place from 8pm-11pm on Friday 9 February, at 35 King Street M27AT. Tickets can be purchased on the app.
