Ravishing redheads will get the opportunity to admire each other’s flaming locks and embrace all things ginger at the UK’s first ever Red Head Day this Saturday.
Taking inspiration from our Dutch neighbours who introduced the first Redhead Day with summer festival Roodharigendag, Manchester is now taking up the flaming torch to represent strawberry blondes in the UK.
Organised by ginger-loving community website Everything for Redheads they will be hosting the event this Saturday at The Printworks.
Everything for Redheads co-founder Jessica Shailes explained the importance of the event.
“Redheads have very few opportunities to feel a sense of community, apart from on the Internet, so we’re seeking to change that,” she said.
“You don’t have to be a redhead to come along – the day is about celebrating everything it means to be a redhead, so if you support redheads you’re more than welcome to share our ginger love.
“It’s sure to be fun for everybody there and a rare opportunity to see so many shades of red in one place.”
But this isn’t the first time that Manchester has opened its arms to the auburn community.
Back in February photographer Nathan Cox dedicated an exhibition to reclaim the term ginger and celebrate all things red.
The event will take place at Waxy O’Connor’s in The Printworks this Saturday and will feature activities including fashion workshops, colour and image consultant sessions and comedians.
Proud redhead and celebrity ambassador Lucy Dixon, who plays Tilly Evans in Hollyoaks, will also attend the event.
She said: “Don’t hide away or let anyone tell you it’s bad to be different. Embrace it and love it. Red heads rule!”
Fred Booth, Centre Director of The Printworks added: “We are very excited to be hosting the first ever Redhead Day UK, it’s important to shine a light on matters like these and to celebrate that everyone is different.
“We hope that this will be a successful day with lots of celebrations.”
