The Mancorialist corner: Manchester fashion anarchists embrace spirit of 70’s and 80’s punk

By Eve Commander

The world of fashion is staging a punk revival this autumn/winter and it’s all about toughening up and getting rebellious.

From Givenchy to Alexander McQueen the punk rebellion has spread across the catwalks in London, Paris, Milan and New York. Versace has particularly honed in on the theme, its 80s-inspired campaign, ‘vunk’, is set to be the new sexy generation of punk.

Celebs have also joined the revolution, Miley Cyrus has infamously hacked off her hair in an attempt to escape her clean-cut Hannah Montana image while in July Hollywood A-listers such as Rihanna and Nicole Ritchie were seen rocking mohawks at the 2013 MET Gala whose theme was Punk: Chaos to Couture

Never one to miss a beat, Manchester’s streets are thronged with people channelling the 70s and 80s-inspired punk trend – whether it’s our leather-clad fashonista, with a flash of plum lipstick and bondage-esque shoes or this girl on Cathedral Street wearing a bandana to hold back her untamed locks.

MODERN-DAY ANARCHY: Manchester embraces punk accents

Our older punk fan donning sunglasses, faded jacket and striped trousers looks as if he never made the transition out of the 80s punk era.

However you don’t need to dye your hair or go get a tattoo to tap into this anti-establishment fashion trend.

Our edgy couple, who look like they are on their fag break, remind us that you can stage a small-scale rebellion as well.

Sporting a short crop, metallic earrings and blazer this woman looks like she means business yet the sneaky addition of her enviably cosy crocs, is her own quiet ‘fingers up’ to traditional office attire.

Think leopard prints, studded stilettos, biker jackets and metallic fastenings and you’ll be bang on trend with this winter’s punk spirit.
