A Manchester musician is chopping off his hair to fight back against the disease that took his grandfather.
Alistair McGeorge, 26, from Altrincham, is raising money for Dementia UK and will be cutting his shoulder-length locks short on March 25.
The campaign is already on track to reach its target of £1,500 after racking up £853.00 worth of donations.
Alistair, who lost his grandfather John Hodgkinson to the disease in November 2014, said he’s ‘absolutely delighted’ and ‘honestly humbled’ by all the contributions he’s received so far.
Speaking about his grandparent, the singer-songwriter said: “I’ve got a lot of fond memories, whether it was going out on boats at St. Helen’s, enjoying walks in the Lake District and even visiting university open days.”
HAIR TODAY: The musician has been growing his hair for almost a decade
Dementia UK is a charity that provides one-on-one support for sufferers and their families as they deal with the illness.
Having witnessed first-hand just how devastating the disease can be, Alistair is intent on doing his part.
He explained: “Dementia is such a cruel disease, and it was a very tough couple of years – so anything I can do to help even a little would be fitting.”
Alistair has been growing his hair for nine years, to the point where many people wouldn’t even recognise him without it.

He’s always been reluctant to cut it short – that was until he realised he could make a sizeable chunk of money for charity.
He’ll now be saying goodbye to his long black mane when he sits in a barber chair on Saturday.
Anyone interested in helping people with dementia can get involved with charities like Dementia UK or volunteer at centres and care homes.
