Speed dating can be a nerve-wracking experience when you’re trying to woo a potential lover but imagine trying to woo a potential business partner with your best pitch, against the clock.
London-based speed pitching event, ‘Hipsters, Hackers and Hustlers’ is heading to Manchester’s MadLab next week and will see budding entrepreneurs come face-to-face with some of the most experienced business moguls in the industry.
Speed pitching challenges hopefulls to explain who they are, who they work for and what they are looking to do in just 30 seconds and event host Adam Turnbull says he’s excited to see what talent he can find up North.
He said: “Manchester has an incredible group of start-ups, developers, designers and ideas people.
“Communicating to people outside of your fundamental area is a pretty neat skill to have. Professor’s like Steven Hawking and Brian Cox really encouraged my interest in incredibly complex theories.
“If you can’t make yourself understood to the lowest common denominator, you should probably look for something else.”
He added: “I think that Manchester is the Silicon Alley compared to California’s Silicon Valley. Manchester is one of those roll up your sleeves, put everything you’ve got into a project type of places.”
Being able to communicate skills and plans quickly and concisely is a vital skill in any career but Mr Turnbull emphasises you don’t have to be a business whizz to benefit from the event.
Although whittling down life experiences and skills into such a short space of time might not sound particularly easy , the event host says there are plenty of ways to think outside the box.
He added: “You just need to explain who you are, what you do and what you need. If you want to throw a back-flip in there, or make it comical, then there’s little reason not to.”
