‘We shall overcome’: Re-live the most poignant chalk messages left on the memorial at St Ann’s Square

It’s been almost one month since a terror attack claimed the lives of 22 people at Manchester Arena.

St Ann’s Square quickly became a shrine to those who were killed as well-wishers both young and old came from across the country to pay their respects.

The spot was also the location of the vigil in which mourners broke out into a spontaneous rendition of Oasis’ Don’t Look Back In Anger.

Chalk messages were left behind as a symbol that the city stands together, defiant and resilient in the wake of the devastation witnessed on May 22.

At the time, city centre chief Pat Karney told the MEN: “I don’t think you can come to St Ann’s Square and not be brought to tears. Lots of the messages are from kids. When you read them, it breaks your heart.

“The nature of these events is that within 15 minutes, they become global events. The people of Manchester are grateful for all the messages of support we’ve had from all over the world.”

Though the flowers were recently removed and the messages have started to fade away, MM is remembering the most poignant words left during the difficult period.
