Millions of Brits were glued to their TV screeens last night to watch Nancy Birtwhistle be crowned the winner of this year’s Great British Bake Off last night.
The 60-year-old Lincolnshire grandmother beat Stockport lad Luis Troyano and favourite Richard Burr to claim the title.
Incredibly, more people tuned in yesterday than for this year’s World Cup final.
And at the time the winner was revealed, 49% of the viewing public were focused on the bake off.
Bake Off judge Mary Berry said Nancy’s ‘quiet determination saw her through’.
Fellow judge Paul Hollywood, who Nancy referred to as ‘the male judge’ praised the Lincolnshire lass’ confidence, creativeness and fearlessness.
Both judges agreed that the class of 2014 had proved ‘exceptional’ and ‘a joy to judge’.
However looking through some of the comments on social media, it appears as though many feel the wrong person won.
With this in mind, MM took to the streets of Manchester to ask the following question:

From the poll, the majority of people think the wrong person won, with 72% agreeing that Nancy was undeserving of the title.
Tom Derby, 32, a chef from Preston, said: “Luis should have won for me. He was the dark horse all through the competition, and he really pulled it out of the bag on the night.
“The fact he didn’t win is baffling.”
Denise Carter, 28, midwife from Salford: “Fancy Nancy winning was just a joke. Luis was miles better in every department.
“No doubt about it, he was robbed.”
Julie Morgan, 45, who is a full-time mother from Wigan, said: “We all wanted Luis to win, he’s the local lad and he’s just seemed so nice and cuddly.”
Jamie, 30, who works in a shoe shop in Wigan, said: “I was really sad that Luis didn’t win. He was just one of those great people you warm to straight away.”
Louise Flather, an 18 year old A-level student, from Didsbury, felt the final’s favourite should have taken his crown.
“It was a disgrace,” she said. “Richard was the best from the start.

“He won star baker 5 times, which has never been done before. I know he didn’t do the best on the night, but every other week he was by far the best.”
Nathan Bardsley, 20, Unemployed, from Newton Heath, felt the true winner should have been Iain Watters, despite backing Louis in the final.
Iain was eliminated after throwing his baked alaska in the bin because the ice-cream had melted.
The programme appeared to show that fellow contestant Diana Beard had removed his batch from the fridge.
The incident caused a whirlwind of controversy and lead to the episode to be labelled ‘Bingate’.
“I wish Iain had won. What happened during Bingate was really unfair, but when he was knocked out, I was behind Luis all the way,” he said.
“He had so much flair and he put everything into his bakes,” Nathan said.
However there were some who agreed that Nancy, at least based on her performance on the night, deserved to be crowned Great British Bake Off Champion.

Kathy Burgess, 28 from the City Centre said: “I was backing Luis from the first episode. It was great that he got to the final but I think the right person won in the end.
“She was always up there with the best and she barely put a foot wrong.”
Mike Turton, 24, who lives in the City Centre said: “Nancy was like everyone’s favourite grandma. She was totally unflappable from start to finish and it never looked like she was going to be beaten.”
Alice Morris, 22, who is a Stockport student, bucked the trend and decided not to back the local contestant, favouring the eventual winner instead.
She said: “She was just so consistent from start to finish, and she just seemed like a lovely person. They all did to be fair but something about her just pressed my buttons.”
Sophie William, a 42 year old Advertising executive from Salford, said: “The right person won. I wish I could bake as well as her but all my efforts end up looking worse than Iain’s baked Alaska.”
