Christmas trees: Where to dispose of a real tree in Manchester

Whether you’re a first-time real tree convert or a seasoned enthusiast – here is everything you need to know about disposing of your Christmas tree in Manchester.

There are a range of convenient and eco-friendly options to recycle your tree from charity collections supporting local causes to council-run drop-off points and green bin collections.

Donate through a charity collection

The charity Just Helping will dispose of your Christmas tree in return for a donation to the charity. Just Helping organise community events that provide a platform for volunteering and fundraising for local causes

Last January more than 4200 volunteers worked with the charity across the UK to collect and recycle 65,000 trees – raising £1.18 million for local charities and community projects.

All you need to do is register your tree online and set up a collection.

Drop-off points

Alternatively, Manchester Council have set up eight drop-off points for real trees across the city.

The council ask that all lights and decorations are removed and left at one of the eight designated drop-off points.

You can drop your real tree throughout January at:

  • Wythenshawe Park and Gardens Athletics Track, Wythenshawe, M23 0PH
  • Heaton Park, Middleton Road entrance, M8 4NB
  • Boggart Hole Clough, near Visitor Centre, Charlestown Road, M9 7DH
  • Patchett Street, off Hyde Road, Ardwick. M12 4RY

If you live in the city centre, you take your real trees for recycling at:

  • Angel Meadow Park, entrance Old Mount Street, M4 4HA
  • Castlefield Bowl, off Rice Street, Manchester M3 4JR
  • Cutting Room Square, Cotton Street side, Ancoats. M4 6BF
  • Smithfield Estate, Northern Quarter (opposite Smithfield Craft Centre), Oak Street. M4 5JD

Garden bin collections

If you’re able to cut your Christmas tree into smaller pieces then Manchester City Council are allowing Christmas trees to be disposed of in green garden waste bins throughout January.

If you don’t have a green bin you can still leave your tree outside on any green bin day in January and it will be collected free of charge.

Christmas trees can also be disposed of at recycling centres across Manchester.
