Manchester gay rights campaigners celebrate same-sex marriage bill success with Canal Street party

By Marios Papaloizou

Parties up and down the country have been thrown to celebrate the passing of legislation legalizing same-sex marriage.

At the heart of Manchester’s gay village last week there were scenes of jubilation as the Lesbian and Gay Foundation (LGF) celebrated in style.

As part of their Love Equal Marriage campaign the LGF threw a lavish party on the city’s famous Canal Street.

The controversial legislation received royal assent last Wednesday with the first marriages expected to take place next summer.

Opponents to the legislation claimed the government had ‘bulldozed’ it through Parliament.

However, this was of little consequence to party-goers on Thursday as they revelled in the victory for equality that has been sought after for so long.
