Manchester Pride patron and former NBA star John Amaechi received an honorary doctorate for his dedication to sport and the LGBT community from the University of Salford yesterday.
Amaechi, OBE, is an openly gay psychologist, former professional athlete and a New York Times bestselling author.
The 6ft 10in retired basketball player supports Manchester Pride and is passionate in promoting equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, as well as providing scholarships for Salford University basketball players through the Amaechi Basketball Centre.
His doctorate recognises the enthusiasm and support the former basketball legend has offered to the LGBT community and sport.
Chief Executive of Manchester Pride, John Stewart, said:”We’re delighted to see John recognised by Salford University – as one of the few openly gay sportsmen he is a great role model.
“In addition to broadcasting John does a huge amount of charitable work, especially with young people and sport.
“He is also in great demand around the world as a speaker so we are very grateful for the time he commits and work he does on behalf of our charity.”
