A Manchester director will showcase his inspiring and refreshing new Brit flick Dream On tonight, a gay love story following the rocky relationship between two young lads, at John Thaw Studio Theatre at 7.30pm.
Originally a play, 24-year-old Lloyd Eyre-Morgan has successfully moved his coming-of-age story to the big screen, with it reaching number one on the LGBT Amazon chart.
Dream on has been met with rave reviews with critics at gaycelluloid.com calling it ‘a fresh and vibrant variant on the coming-of-age theme with a raw distinct raw edge to it’.
Set in a 1980s Welsh campsite, innocent northerner Paul meets George, a jack the lad from London.
Both teenagers dream of escape, however this dream goes through many ups and downs including Paul’s domineering controlling mother, Denise.
MM spoke exclusively to Lloyd, who said: “Dream On was inspired by visiting welsh campsites as a kid, I love the welsh culture I’ve tried to throw a lot of this into the film from my experiences of being in Wales, I’m half Welsh myself.
“It was exciting because I didn’t really know what to expect, I got a credit card and a crew of seven together and made it on a whim, and hoped to god it would get picked up and released, and luckily it did!”
Lloyd wrote the stage version and put in into production in 2011. The two lead actors who were in that production reprised their roles in the movie.
Lloyd has previously spoke to online news blogger The M Report about how he connected with the story from experiences of his own life as a gay teenager.
“It wasn’t autobiographical, although some people have said they can see Paul in me,” he said.
“I like to think I’m more confident than him. My sister was gay also, so we came out to each other. I had support which was great. I told my mum she was gay passed the phone to my sister who told my mum I was gay.”
Tickets for the August 9 showing of Dream On range from £5.50 to £7.50 and can be bought from the Manchester Pride website click here.
