‘Enough is enough’ – that is the bold message being issued from Manchester Pride and the Lesbian and Gay Foundation, demanding Russia end their anti-LGBT legislation.
Recent laws in Russia prevented the promotion of ‘non-traditional’ relationships and banned foreign gay and lesbian couples from adopting Russian children.
Yet the two Manchester-based LGBT groups came together on Tuesday to discuss the on-going homophobic legilislation in Russia and demand it cease.
Chief executive of Manchester Pride John Stewart said: “Manchester and St Petersburg have enjoyed a cultural and economic friendship for over fifty years, and this relationship is the ideal channel for Manchester Pride to show its alliance with the city’s LGBT community.
“Manchester is known throughout the world for its gay village and views of acceptance and compassion. It is in this spirit of fellowship that we offer our messages of courage and hope to Russia, with love.”
The ‘To Russia, With Love’ campaign was the main theme of this year’s Manchester Pride – which saw thousands descend for the Big Weekend and voice their support for St Petersburg’s LGBT community.
It was one of the key messages at the festival’s annual Candlelit Vigil, and the film below captures the inspiring display of solidarity.
Andrew Gilliver, Campaigns & Engagement Manager for The Lesbian & Gay Foundation, said: “Our colleagues in St Petersburgwant to keep the communication channels open, and it’s really important we continue to show our support for our Russian LGB&T brothers and sisters. We’re calling on all Enough is Enough! supporters to take action now and show their solidarity!”
Bars across the Gay Village united last month in a boycott of Russian vodka to show solidarity for the LGBT community there. The bars included Eden, Richmond Tea Room and G-A-Y.
Liz Done, duty manager at Eden Bar, confirmed that they have decided to stop stocking or selling Russian vodkas such as Russian Standard and the Stolichnaya range.
She told MM: “[The boycott] is not intended to hurt the ordinary Russian people, it will hopefully persuade the Russian Government to change their stance regarding gay and lesbian rights.
“We’re trying to hit people where it hurts, in their wallets.”
