Review: Cocktail Masterclass @ DoubleTree by Hilton, Piccadilly, Manchester

By Edward Roberts

Most cocktail fans will admit that after years of watching barmen effortlessly mix and muddle their favourite drink they’ve tried to recreate the magic from the comfort of their homes… and failed.

But for those eager mixologists looking to showcase their skills over the festive season, then the Doubletree Hilton’s cocktail masterclass could be just the ticket.

Expert tutelage came from the very friendly Brian expert who seemed to know just about everything there is to know about not only what goes into the alcoholic blend, but when the cocktail was created, why the glass is used, and who made it famous.

And it’s this storytelling that whets your appetite and builds the anticipation before a single drop of alcohol is poured.

First up is James Bond’s tipple of choice – a classic martini – arguably the perfect way to kick-off a suave festive soirée.

If your palette longs for fruitier notes then mastering the cosmopolitan is a must.  The classic concoction is made with cranberry juice and tastes delicious when served chilled.

If you’re looking to impress friends with a twist on the classic, then the blueberry-infused cosmo is one to try.

Both of these sweet-tasting drinks are bursting with summer flavour that is really welcome on a cold winter’s night.

Once the demos are over we’re on to the really good bit where we’re unleashed behind the bar!

Depending on your skill level it’s a case of creating some magic or causing havoc – either outcome is what makes the night so entertaining.

The barman’s patience really is outstanding as he guides us from an empty glass to a full-blown cocktail in a matter of minutes.

There is of course more than meets the eye when it comes to crafting the perfect drink and it’s easy to go wrong – thankfully Brian is professional even in the face of some questionable techniques.

The final drink we rustle up on the night is the Cuban classic mojito – this time Brian shows us how to concoct a classic number and another one with a twist.

The original mojito is deliciously fresh but in my opinion fails to match up to the originality of its marmalade-infused counterpart.

So after a really enjoyable evening I sauntered home ready to hit the cocktail cabinet and try out my newly-acquired skills… cocktail anyone?

Advance booking is required for the ‘masterclasses which range in price from £25-£35 per person.

Bookings can be made by calling 0871 230 3672.
