Johnny Marr-iage! Smiths legend wows newlyweds with wedding tribute at Apollo gig

A newlywed couple received the mother of all wedding gifts when Smiths legend Johnny Marr paused his homecoming gig to play them a romantic tribute.

The 55-year-old encouraged the packed out Manchester Apollo to take part in a special rendition of the 80’s classic, There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, in honour of manager Joe Moss and his wife, Sarah.

It wasn’t long before the blushing bride shared footage of the dreamy, seven minute performance online which shows the energetic crowd singing along with the adored Whythenshawe-born musician.

Marr said: “Will you please do me a favour? You’ll be glad if you say yes. Seriously, I’m not going to do it until you say yes.”

“Okay today is a very special day for me and the band and everyone around my life. He’s one of the most important people in my life. He told me I was good and made me form the Smiths.

“My manager got married today, check that out. Yeah Joe and Sarah got married, how cool is that?”

“We’re going to be the wedding band, you guys are all the guests and we’re going to play their first wedding song all together. How does that sound?”

With outstretched arms and a united front, the 3,500 capacity fan filled Apollo Theatre did just that.

Newlywed Sarah said: “It was such a fantastic gig, and that just caught me and Joe totally by surprise!”
