Terrifier 3 review: Christmas kills early

Terrifier 3 is the third film in director Damien Leone’s horror franchise, which follows killer clown Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) and his companion Victoria Heyes (Samantha Scaffidi) on a murder spree.

Scaffidi’s character is a victim from the first film, who has been possessed by a demon.

Art the Clown and Victoria aim to murder anyone who is connected with the protagonist, Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera), in the hopes of making Sienna the next demon tether to the human plain, and for their own twisted entertainment.

The slasher is set at Christmas, in Miles County, New York, and takes place five years after the last one, which was set at Halloween.

The change in season undoubtedly heightens the fear factor of Leone’s piece, with the association to such a joyous period of the year increasing the sinister nature of the film.

LaVera’s Sienna puts on an emotional performance depicting her battle against both her mental and physical demons.

And instead of experiencing a Christmas to remember, Sienna faces a Christmas to forget.

If you are not a fan of blood, guts and gore, this film is simply not for you.

Released in the UK on 11 October, the 18 rated thriller comes with a violence warning at many cinemas.

Viewers must be warned, this film is enough to have you reaching for a sick bag.

Leone is not shy when it comes to illustrating death in the film, with an estimated 22 people killed in total.

The blood and gore effects are so realistic they will have you questioning the line between fiction and reality.

And the sense of paranoia in the cinema is like no other – you will be checking Art the Clown is not behind you at all times.

Scaffidi’s Victoria is also downright terrifying – the twisted partner to the notorious clown killer.

For gore fans, Terrifier 3 ticks all the boxes – however, I found the ending rather rushed.

Leone spends 90 minutes of the running time building up to the finale – slaughtering children, adults, and more or less any being which stands between Art the Clown and Sienna. But I believe some of the crucial deaths were passed over too quickly.

However, the film has proved itself as a fan favourite already, amassing a huge £14.4 million on its opening weekend.

The terrifying blockbuster is now showing in all major UK cinemas and is expected to be available on PVOD in the coming months.
