Browncoats unite: Serenity set for 10th anniversary screening at Printworks

The tenth anniversary of Joss Whedon’s award-winning sci-fi film Serenity will be celebrated with a special screening at the Odeon Printworks next month.

The screening has been organised by Manchester film company Grimm Up North and will give fans a rare opportunity to see the film on the big screen at a flagship cinema in the North.

Cosplay is greatly encouraged and there will be many competitions and free gifts, including posters of the film and other Whedon-themed prizes

Greg Walker, festival and events manager for Grimm Up North, said: “The guys at Odeon are huge fans as well so we’ve been upgraded to a screen twice the size of the one we usually receive.

“It even has a gallery so it’s going to be an amazing big screen expereince for anyone who’s only caught the film on Netflix or DVD.”

Serenity is a continuation of 2002 TV series Firefly, which blended elements of science fiction and Westerns, featured a fantastically realised ensemble cast and a fleshed-out universe.

Firefly was cancelled after just 12 episodes of the ordered 14, when Fox didn’t realise its potential.

Many fans see Fox as sabotaging the show due to the fact they aired episodes out of order and used advertisements to portray it as a zany comedy, making it hard for the show to find an audience.

The show gained momentum after it became available on DVD and gained a large fan following who call themselves ‘Browncoats’.

Its rising success was enough to encourage Universal to buy the rights and allow Joss to continue the story in the film Serenity.

Greg said: “We are very excited to celebrate 10 years since the release of Serenity here at Grimm Up North, like many people I lached onto it long after the criminally early demise and then watched Serenity afterwards.

“Seeing this film on the big screen is going to be such a great oppurtinity for die-hard browncoats and Whedonites but also people new to Joss since his work on The Avengers films.”

While there has been no sequel to Serenity the storyline has been continued further through a series of comic books from Dark Horse, although many of the comics fill in back-story as opposed to continuing the series.

This year sees the release of another Joss Whedon film, Avengers: Age of Ultron – the sequel to the third highest grossing film of all time.

Tickets for the screening come in two options: a standard ticket priced at £7.50 or a Special Gallery ticket which also includes unlimited food and drink.
