Preview: Emilie Autumn and The Bloody Crumpets @ The Ritz, Manchester

By Ella Murphy

Emilie Autumn, along with her all-female backing band The Bloody Crumpets, are returning to Manchester to unleash their fantastical world this summer.

Kicking off the European leg of her world tour in the UK, The Ritz will be her host on August 25.

Californian-bred Autumn’s introduction to music was of the classical genre when she was just four – when she began to learn the violin.

She later became an accomplished violinist when her talents became recognised, while playing in Courtney Love’s backing band, during a 2004 European tour. Along with ‘shredding’ violin her music also often integrates the unfamiliar sound of a harpsichord.

Seemingly genre-less and building a cult following, Autumn’s fascination with the Victorian era is reflected in her music which is known to her fans as Victorian industrial.

Unfortunately Autumn’s personal battles against bipolar disorder have often overshadowed her music in the news. The disorder saw her admitted into a psychiatric ward in her hometown.

Yet this proved to become a huge turning point in her career. Based on her time institutionalised, she wrote an autobiographical novel –The Asylum For Wayward Victorian Girls – which her most recent album Fight Like A Girl is based upon.

Well-known for her theatrical live shows, Emilie Autumn and her fellow Bloody Crumpets artistically depict an elaborate display of burlesque, cabaret and glam rock. Surely a mix you won’t want to miss.

Emilie Autumns’ UK Tour dates:

August 23 – The Picture House, Edinburgh

August 24 – Rock City, Nottingham

August 25 – The Ritz, Manchester
