Phone sex operator Cameryn Moore will be performing her award-winning play Phone Whore and writing her world-famous ‘sidewalk smut’ at the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival this month.
The critically-acclaimed North American playwright and performer will set up a ‘sidewalk smut’ stand where, on a typewriter, she will create bespoke erotica for passers-by.
She will do this in order to advertise her intimate solo play, Phone Whore, which draws on over six years worth of phone sex encounters.
Bill Parslow, in his review of the show at Brighton Fringe 2014 for FringeReview, said: “If you want to hear what this huge market for sex chat is all about, see this show.”
The play, one-act long but filled with frequent phone interruptions, unearths taboo and truth as it investigates ‘deviant’ desires in today’s society.
The play has not only toured the world but won numerous awards, such as ‘Critics’ Choice’ at the 2013 Houston Fringe Festival and ‘Best Drama’ at the 2011 Victoria Fringe Festival.
Praised as ‘captivating to watch’ (The Spectator, UK) and ‘by far the most intimate and insightful theatre experience you’re likely to have’ (roverarts.com), the play is clearly popular.
But don’t be fooled that it is an easy experience.
The play moves from playful ‘vanilla’ calls to those which go in darker directions.
Patricia-Ann Young, reviewing the show for Edinburgh Fringe 2013, called it: “incredibly brutal, piercing, and thought-provoking.”
She wrote: “To say that this isn’t for the faint-hearted would be an understatement: fully-grown adults were running for the door…well before the sucker-punch of an ending.”
Another reviewer, Charliebois Post from Montreal added: “You are challenged, even tested; but it is a cathartic moment when all of your values are thrown into sharp focus and how you deal with the entire play becomes a case of how you parse it in your own head.”
Both acts are as part of Ms. Moore’s World 2015 tour, which comprises of two solo shows: ‘Smut Slam’ and ‘Smut Stand’.
The tour is sponsored by organizations from around the world, such as the International Sex Workers Foundation for Arts, Culture, and Education, The Slutcracker, The Sitting Room and Cliterati.
Ms. Moore’s ‘Smut Stand’ will be in service Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 July, at locations soon to be announced on her Twitter account, @camerynmoore.
Phone Whore will be performed every evening from Wednesday 22 to Friday 24 July at the Kings Arms in Salford.
Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start, and a question and answer session will follow each show.
Tickets are £10 (£8 for concessions) and can be purchased in advance by clicking here.
